The Aussie Summer Camping Essentials Checklist

Camping is one of the most popular activities in Australia—and with such easy access to so many stunning vistas and landscapes right in our own backyards, it makes sense! Some of us are not naturally inclined to camping, and while not every homebody intends to turn into an outdoor adventurer, everyone ought to experience the highs of camping at least once in their life.

Now the most popular time to camp is during the summer. With hours of extra sunshine and warm temperatures, summer certainly beats winter when it comes to camping in comfort. But the Aussie summer carries its own set of challenges with it that campers should be aware of, such as increased animal activity and heightened risk of bushfires.

So if you aren’t too keen on roughing it in the outback, sleeping in your own sweat, then read on to learn what supplies you ought to bring with you to ensure a comfortable camping expedition. Here is your ultimate Aussie summer camping essentials checklist.

Heavy-duty tarp

A heavy-duty tarp is truly the most versatile tool you could bring with you on your camping trip. They are durable, waterproof, and easy to store and clean.

A tarp can be used for creating a dry clearing to sit or eat on, as well as erect a temporary wall between campers or camping spots. And not only can a tarp protect you from harsh sunlight, but in a tight spot, it can also provide reliable short-term shelter at night or against rain.

There is a wide range of Aussie-made tarps online that are available for purchase, so take a quick browse to see what kinds of deals and bundles you may be able to take advantage of. With a tarp in your camping inventory, you’ll be one step ahead of any surprises and be prepared for a variety of situations in any season.

Tent or swag

In case you aren’t camping in an RV or your own car, then you obviously will want to bring some sort of tent, swag, or sleeping bag…unless you want to sleep on the ground. You will be far more comfortable and safe sleeping in something that covers your body and keeps your belongings protected.

If you bring a full tent with you, be sure to also pack a hammer or mallet so you can easily secure your stakes. A tent will keep summer-loving bugs and small animals away from your food, as well as offer shelter from inclement weather. In this way, even a full-body swag will offer enough of a sanctuary during your trip.

But at the bare minimum, a sleeping bag would also be sufficient. If you want to sleep under the stars to unwind in nature and immerse yourself fully, then be sure you’ve brought along a sleeping bag that is appropriate for the weather and climate. If you are camping somewhere humid and rainy, then a thin, breathable material is best to stay cool in; if you are camping in the desert where nights are cold even in the summer, then a thicker sleeping bag is ideal.

And if you’re in a bind, then use the tarp you brought! Oh, and bring a pillow, too… unless you prefer rocks!

Lanterns or Torches

Visibility is important for camping safely at night, so be sure to bring some sort of light source with you. Bring either a torch or a lantern (200-500 lumens) with you, along with spare batteries or some way to recharge it.

Light is essential for camping tasks like setting up your tent, cooking meals, and reading.

A torch can help you see at a distance in the dark and manoeuvre safely through the bush, while a lantern can help you facilitate a largely-lit area at your campsite.

If you are camping far out in the wild, then nighttime will become extremely dark fast. For your own safety and convenience, be sure to bring at least two reliable light sources with you. A good rule of thumb is one main light source per campsite and one smaller light source per person.

Oh, and your smartphone flashlight does not count!

Matches and a fire starter

You will need a safe way to light your campfire, should you want one, and using two twigs will not make it happen. Even if you aren’t planning on cooking while camping, it is always a good idea to bring either matches or a lighter with you.

No matter what your camping plans are, you should be sure to bring at least one method for safely making a fire. In case of emergencies, fire will help you and others see better in the dark, as well as help ward off smaller animals and bugs like mosquitoes and flies.

Even in dire situations, a fire can be extremely helpful, and the smoke can even be used to indicate your location should you need to be rescued. Just be sure to safely light your fire and sufficiently put it out before leaving.

Don’t forget to check for fire bans which are common in Australia during the summer months.

Only you can prevent bushfires!
